A team of archaeologists examined the remains of a ship that sank back in the 15th century and uncovered new facts that gave a different perspective on the vessel.
It is noted that the so-called “Madero Shipwreck” was first discovered back in the 60s of last century in the waters of the Stockholm Archipelago off the coast of Sweden in the Baltic Sea. Only 40 years later, new dives were made to the wreck site, but the data obtained were either incomplete or not published and many questions about the wreck remained unanswered.
In 2022, a team of scientists from Stockholm University conducted an investigation that included inspecting and documenting visible parts of the ship, as well as taking samples, which together provided new information about the wreck. Especially, as the researchers observed, several key and informative parts of the hull are visible above the seabed, and the ship’s cargo is also easily accessible, providing a wealth of information without impacting the ship’s remains.
