A rare Ulfbert sword has been found at the bottom of Poland’s Vistula River

The Sports and Recreation Centre of the Polish city of Wloclawek reported in a publication on its social media that during the dredging of the Vistula River, workers found an iron sword in excellent condition. X-ray analysis carried out by scientists shows that the blade of the find bears the inscription “+VLFBERHT+”, indicating that the artefact belongs to the sword of Ulfbert.

According to preliminary estimates by researchers, the weapon was made around 950 AD, which is around the Viking Age. In total, over 170 such swords have been found throughout Europe, less than a dozen of which were discovered in Poland. Most have been found in Scandinavia, as well as in Eastern Europe.
